A Few Simple Things To Brighten Up Your Week

  • Saturday, 27 February 2016

Weekends for me are a time to get organised, catch up on things left over from during the week and plan ahead and get sorted for the week to come. As boring as it may seem I love to spend at least one of my weekend days pottering about the house, planning, sorting and organising. As I currently work a 9-5 Monday-Friday job, it is nice to spend some quality time in my home at the weekend.

Here are a few simple things that I like to do to brighten up my week;
  • Buy some pretty flowers
  • Paint my nails
  • Change bedsheets
  • Hoover the entire house
  • Clean make up brushes
  • Make lists for the week
  • Create a meal plan for the week
  • Catch up on laundry
  • Dust
  • Make a new playlist
  • Fake tan
  • Do a weekly food shop
  • Take blog photos
  • Plan and schedule blog posts
  • Catch up on my latest Netflix series
  • Read a book

Do you like to get organised at the weekend?

Beauty Products | Five Recent Empties

  • Monday, 22 February 2016

Five make up products that I have recently finished, three base products and two skincare. I have often read these types of posts but have never written one myself. Since I seem to have used up a few products at around the same time, I thought that I would write one too.

I have been using this Essential Moisture Night Cream by No.7 for the last six months or so. It is a brilliant night cream that is so rich and thick that only a tiny amount is needed to cover the face and neck. It is scent free which is great because I don't really like anything too heavily scented on my skin, especially before I go to sleep. I have enjoyed using this product so much that I have actually just bought another one which I will crack open tonight. I have also just finished a sample bottle of Lancome's Advanced Genifique Youth Activating Concentrate Serum. I have been applying this once I have taken all of my make up off and before I moisturise. It is such a creamy serum that soaks straight into the skin and leaves it feeling so soft. It's quite expensive to buy full size so I think I'll probably have a hunt around for a cheaper alternative.

Make up wise I seem to have finished off a couple of base products lately. I first ran out of my Nars Sheer Glow in Santa Fe, but thankfully got a brand new bottle for Christmas so I didn't have to wait in between bottles. I have already raved about this product so much on Madolyn Thinks but in a nut shell I think it is the most perfect foundation I have tried to date, that offers amazing coverage, a flawless finish yet doesn't feel heavy or cake-y on the skin. I also ran out of my Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard. This is a brilliant concealer with a doe-foot applicator for precise coverage - I have already picked up a replacement one of these too!

I have also finished another foundation this past week which is the Bourjois Paris 123 Perfect Foundation in medium. This is a great everyday foundation, as I don't like to wear my high-end products at work, that isn't too dissimilar to Benefit's Hello Flawless. It has great coverage and was really easy to apply and blend. I'm not sure if I will buy this one again straight away as I feel that there are so many drug-store brands and types of foundation to try that I might opt for a completely different one next time.

What make up products have you finished lately?

A Trip To Leeds With Space NK | Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint

  • Sunday, 21 February 2016

Last weekend I hopped on the train to Leeds City Centre for an appointment at the Space NK Apothecary to try the latest launch from Nars; The Velvet matte Skin Tint. I had a lovely time and it was so nice having a bit of a pamper and getting to try a range of Nars products including their fantastic skincare range.

I was given a glass of Champagne and was taken upstairs which had been transformed into a Nars make up heaven. It was so lovely being sat at a private counter away from the general public and able to try and discover bits and pieces from the entire make up range.

I was really blown away by the Velvet Matte Skin Tint. I have been using their Sheer Glow foundation for just over a year now, as well as their creamy concealer, so I presumed that I would get along with another base product by Nars. It has an extremely light-weight feel to it and my skin felt as though it could really breathe. Rachael applied the product with her fingertips which felt so nice on the skin and gave a more even finish as the product almost works like a tinted moisturiser.

It is a light to medium coverage so a small amount of concealer was needed to cover up any blemishes but I was really happy with the finish. Although it is described as matte, I found that it was more of a natural finish so I still wanted to apply some setting powder to finish off the look. It comes in a huge range of shades and the packaging was spot on as always with it's black matte finish.

These are all of the products that Rachael used on me, it was so tempting to just buy the whole lot! I especially loved the eyeshadow pallet which is currently a Space NK exclusive but I resisted and might treat myself come payday.

This was a face chart that Rachael filled in using the products that she had applied. It is such a good way to help the customer remember what was used and how to create the look again - I think it looks so pretty!

After the session I was presented with my Modern Minimalist Collection box which consisted of a range of miniatures, along side a full sized Velvet Matte Skin Tint, to enable me to create an entire look. These boxes are for sale at Space NK for £60 - a great investment in my eyes as you are able to try a whole range of Nars products. Keep your eyes peeled for my post next week when I will create the Modern Minimalist look using my gift box.

What are your favourite pieces from Nars? Will you be trying the Modern Minimalist Collection?

Brand Focus | Introducing The Neutrals Palette From Laminau

  • Saturday, 20 February 2016

One of the dreamiest neutral eyeshadow pallets that I have ever seen by the fantastic up and coming makeup brand Laminau.

Laminau | The Neutrals Pallet* | Link | £8.50

I love the range of colours in this pallet and feel as though it covers a beautiful selection from light to dark. There are fifteen different shades which is amazing value for money, and also provides the ability to create multiple looks. The lighter shades offer an amazingly natural look which can easily be built upon using the darker more olive shades to create a more evening, natural smokey eye look.

I can definitely see myself using this pallet on a daily basis, not only are the shades so suitable for an everyday natural look, but the quality of the of the eye shadows are also brilliant. They are highly pigmented and easily buildable. The pallet does come with a handy travel-sized applicator, however I personally prefer to apply my eyeshadow with a blending brush so I don't suppose I will use this too much.

Have you tried anything from Laminau's Makeup range?

New Additions | Daily Accessories

I'm not usually a huge accessories lover. I really like pretty jewellery but I don't often wear it on a daily basis, mostly because I tend to forget to put it on. I have three very pretty, sliver rings and a silver hooped earring in the top of my ear that I literally never take off. Necklaces, bracelets and other bits and bobs are usually something that I wouldn't wear day-to-day. However, recently I have been wearing a few more accessories on a daily basis which are so easy to wear and suit practically every outfit.

This purple statement watch was a gift given to me by my Grandma a few years ago. Unfortunately I don't know where it is from but I rediscovered it recently and it has barely left my left wrist. I think a statement piece such as this is a great accessory to own as it can become a feature to your outfit or offer a slightly different look to another wise simple look.

Another accessory that has barely left my wrist of late is this beautiful silver beaded bracelet by Joma Jewellery. This was a lovely Christmas present from my Auntie and Uncle and I absolutely love it. It is the perfect amount of sparkle that is still simple and subtle - very much my taste.

The third and final accessory that I have been loving of late is this simple white rope, anchor bracelet by Coconut Lane. This is a wonderful company that stock a range of quirky, simple and sophisticated products from home wear to jewellery. This bracelet is only £8 and you can use my unique code 'madolyn 20' and save 20% off the whole site.

What accessories have you been loving of late?

Week Night Chills | Netflix Top Picks

  • Tuesday, 16 February 2016

Week nights, especially during this time of year, can be pretty difficult when it comes to decide what to do. With it being so dark and cold outside, sometimes the last thing on my mind is leaving the house. One of my favourite things to do on a week night is pop on some comfy lounge-wear, get a big mug of tea and chill out on the sofa with Netflix. Here are some of my Netflix top picks at the moment.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine - A funny sitcom based in and around the Brooklyn Nine-Nine police detective department. It is a great program to lift your spirits and with each episode only lasting 20mins its a really quick and easy show to watch.

Making A Murderer - I have actually finished watching this show but I would highly recommend it. After taking the internet by storm I jumped on the band wagon and watched this true-life documentary series which follows the trial of a man who is framed for a murder he claims he didn't commit.

Outnumbered - A typically english comedy about the everyday life of an everyday family. The children in this series were given a loose story line but the program itself has no script and is mostly improvised. It is really light-hearted and easy to watch after a long day at work.

Sherlock - I love police detective shows and have read the stories of Sherlock Holmes so this, naturally, is a show that I love watching. Each episode is an hour and a half long so it is more like a film series in a way, with drama, comedy and brilliant acting.

The Life Of Mammals & The Blue Planet - I love a good nature documentary and you can't get much better than one narrated by the wonderful David Atenbourough. I love to really relax on an evening by putting an episode of one of these series on and learning new things about our beautiful planet.

What are your favourite week night Netflix picks?

Five Work Appropriate Lipsticks

  • Monday, 15 February 2016

Finding the perfect day time, work appropriate lipstick can be difficult. It is hard to get a happy medium between a flattering lip shade that is subtle yet provides colour and a bit of warmth. I have gathered together a few lipsticks that I think are completely work appropriate yet still add a pop of colour.

Making Simple Daily Healthier Choices

  • Sunday, 14 February 2016

As ever, one of my new year aims was to become more healthy. I feel like I have gotten into a bit of a slump and I seem to be finding it hard to motivate myself of late. So I thought it best to take a step back, look at my daily routine and see what aspects I can change or adjust to ensure that I am making little, yet significant, healthier choices.

Swap Tea & Coffee For The Occasional Green Tea - Green tea is knows for its cleansing abilities and the fact that in can increase metabolism. I think that if I swap a couple of my daily teas or coffees for a mug of green tea then it will benefit me a little more in the long run.

Ensure That I Eat Breakfast Everyday - Sometimes it is so easy to lie-in, rush around to get ready for work and skip out on breakfast. However, I am starting to consciously set time aside every morning to ensure that I have a breakfast as it prevents mid-morning snacks, increases focus and concentration and kick-starts daily metabolism.

Take Fruit As An Afternoon Snack - Working a 9-5, Monday-Friday office job can easily create an unhealthy environment when trying to be healthy. Whether it's someone's birthday, someone is leaving, someone is returning ect ect, there always seems to be treats of some sort in our staffroom. I have been making sure that I take some grapes or an apple to work everyday to feed those afternoon sugar cravings without having to cave and eat from the communal treat store.

What tips do you have for making simple daily healthy choices?

Valentine Inspired Beauty Picks

  • Thursday, 11 February 2016

Whether you have plans this Valentine's Day or not, no matter if you are in a relationship or single I still think it's fun to get into the holiday, embrace the love and have a little pamper and look your best. If you show your love to your partner, your family or even just yourself, here are a few Valentine Beauty Picks inspired by Valentine's Day.

I love this beautiful Molton Brown body wash that was my secret Santa gift from Work. It smells seriously amazing and so I'm going to treat myself with this pink pomegranate bauble when pampering myself in preparation for Sunday. Another little treat that I'm going to use is this Jo Malone Blackberry & Bay fragrance. I only want to use this for special occasions as it was a very special gift given to me this Christmas. With it being Valentine's Day this weekend I will obviously be painting my nails with a classic red and this beautiful 'Made In Red' polish from Accessories will be perfect.

Make up wise I will most likely keep things fairly similar to my everyday look, paying particular attention to my eyes and lips. I love this eye lash curler by No.7 which is a beautiful gold colour and really gentle yet firm on the lashes. After a coat of Urban Decay's Better Than Sex Mascara my lashes look much fuller and longer which really helps to open up my eyes. For a natural yet full- lipped look I have been applying this Posie-Tint lip product by Benefit that is so hydrating on the lips yet provides a hint of colour, parallel to their ever famous lip tints.

Although I love the idea of Valentine's Day, getting ready and using products inspired by the celebration I'm not too fussy about all of the love-y dove-y stuff. James and I are spending the day with his family by the seaside which will be really lovely. Fingers crossed the weather holds up and we can enjoy some lovely fish and chips on the sea front.

What are your Valentine's Day  plans?

A Few Things I Have Picks Up Lately | Shopping Haul

  • Wednesday, 10 February 2016

Working in York City Centre, although convenient, can be pretty lethal on my purse strings. Working in a small office environment, during my lunch hour I find I really need to stretch my legs and get a little breathing space and fresh air. However, it is little difficult not to pop into the shops, especially when they have huge red sale banners in the windows. It is a little miss-matched but I thought I would write a little haul post of things I have picked up on my lunch breaks over the past few weeks.

I have been in need of a new pair of gym bottoms. Boring I know, but I have been on the hunt for some comfortable, breathable, black leggings, that cut off just below the knee. Sports Direct had a huge January sale on and so I picked up a pair by USA PRO that were originally £35 down to £8 - quite a bit of a bargain. Another bargain I picked up was a book from Urban Outfitters titled "712 More Things To Write About". This was supposed to be about £15 but was reduced to just £4. I picked this up to get my creativity flowing as it is filled with lots of little writing exercises designed to get your brain pumping.

I seem to have developed a new obsession with The White Company and can't resist having a look around this beautiful shop. The other week I popped in for a very innocent peruse when I stubbled upon with lovely little trinket dish. It was reduced to just £3 and thought that it would look really pretty in my living room with a little candle placed on top.

I am also a huge fan of the Gorjuss designs and actually picked up this years calendar with their pretty little images all over it. I discovered this really cute Iphone case in the pound shop of all places and knew that I needed it in my life. I love this design and for just £1 I couldn't really let it pass me by.

Beauty wise I was in need of something to help get rid of black heads. Not the nicest thing I know, but I seem to have had a bit of a run of them lately and so I bought these Tea Tree Witch Hazel Deep Down Detox 2Step Nose Pore Strips. I have only used them once since buying them but I feel as though it has made a huge difference already. You use the first Charcoal infused strip to clear your pores then the second to soak, cleanse and close them. I also picked up two beautiful little nail varnishes in the Accessorize sale for just £1 each. They are such pretty little bottles and the polish itself isn't too bad either!

Are you tempted by the sales on your lunch break?
